SENIOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEER - HVDC SPECIALIST
We have been retained by our client to identify and recruit a Senior Electrical Engineer - HVDC Specialist. Our client is a privately-held, global provider of engineering, construction, and project management services in the areas of energy, transportation, communications, mining, oil and gas, and government services.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station engineering expertise to the Power Global Business Unit, a multi-billion dollar, rapidly expanding business line. This position requires an experienced, senior engineer with strong working knowledge of key aspects necessary to design and implement detailed specifications for HVDC converter station facilities.
This position will be located in the Eastern United States.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Manage an engineering design team focused on designing, specifying and overseeing the implementation of HVDC converter stations.
- Provide technical direction for specific tasks and assign work to subordinate senior engineers, engineers, designers, drafters or project sub-groups.
- Plan and conduct design and client services work within the business unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
- Represent Owner as OE for HVDC converter stations designed, furnished and commissioned by 3rd party EPC-AE Contractor.
- General Duties to include: review and validation of associated 3rd party EPC-AE and/or sub contractor AC/DC utility system studies, HVDC performance parameters, operational modes, proposed interconnections to AC systems, HVDC converter equipment type(s) and configuration(s) and other aspects of the HVDC interconnection.
- Coordinate technical issues with other departments on projects including constructability requirements and reviews.
- Attend monthly Owner/EPC-AE Project technical review meetings in Owner offices and or 3rd party EPC-AE Contractor offices.
- Perform supplier design reviews of HVDC converter equipment and attend Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) as required.
- Provide OE oversight of supplier HVDC equipment fabrication and testing activities leading up to equipment shipment, including review of supplier design documents, performance data, testing data and other critical design and performance validation data.
Key skills and experience that our client desires include:
- Minimum 10 - 15 years experience with the successful development, execution and commissioning of large HVDC converter station facilities, particularly from an overall EPC perspective.
- Strong engineering design and client services skills with demonstrated knowledge of HVDC Converter Station design and construction.
- Excellent client management and contractor oversight skills with specific experience with high voltage systems and AC/DC conversion facilities.
- Detailed and current knowledge of key aspects necessary to implement detailed specifications that would encompass overall scope, interfaces/battery limits, performance, testing and commissioning aspects of HVDC converter station facilities.
- Knowledge of general safety and special grounding and safety considerations applicable to HVDC converter stations.
- Working knowledge of high-voltage AC substation design, including layout, configuration, lightning protection, equipment specification and related control, metering, relaying and communications systems.
- Strong verbal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with both internal senior management and external client.
- Knowledgeable of industry standards with a high level of business savvy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- International business travel required.
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
- M.S. in Electrical Engineering (preferred).
- Professional Engineering Registration within U.S. state or Canadian province.
